Federal agents arrested a 17-year-old resident of McKinney on October 5, accusing the teenager of plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self. The Texas Republican is currently campaigning for his third term in Congress, representing the state's third district. Campaign officials confirmed the details of the plot to Trending Blast, noting that the incident has prompted a significant increase in the lawmaker's security awareness as early voting continues across the state.
The congressman’s team first learned of the detention through the U.S. Capitol Police on October 6. Investigators indicated that the teen had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance. Authorities told the campaign that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack in the name of the Islamic State (ISIS). The intended target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans, which was scheduled for October 17 and expected to draw former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests.
Upon receiving the news, Rep. Self stated that his team immediately upped its profile to remain more vigilant. While he noted he already had a robust security detail, the group adjusted its situational awareness. The congressman said his extensive military background, which included multiple deployments to combat zones, helped him process the threat calmly rather than with panic. He explained that because the arrest had already occurred, the primary concern was determining if the suspect was a lone wolf or part of a larger group.
Self’s wife, who has been a military spouse for 25 years, also approached the situation with seriousness, having experienced the risks of his career firsthand. The representative acknowledged that he had received threats before, but this was the first time one had escalated to the level of a federal arrest. He emphasized that the seriousness of the incident was clear to his staff, understanding it could have resulted in a much more significant event based on the information provided.
Despite the alleged plot, the congressman attended the October 17 fundraiser as planned. He reported that he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans without any incident occurring. Since the event, Self has continued his normal campaigning schedule, including poll greeting and meeting with voters daily. He stated that the threat would not deter him from alerting the public to what he views as a concerning political ideology.
The arrest aligns with Rep. Self’s recent legislative focus on opposing Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing the implementation of Sharia law in the United States, asserting that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law. His district, which includes McKinney, has seen heightened debate over local religious developments, including a unanimous city council vote in August to approve a site plan for the expansion of a local mosque. That decision followed hours of contentious public comment and subsequent efforts to recall several council members.
Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, also reacted to the news by condemning the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. As the investigation continues, the identity of the 17-year-old suspect has not yet been made public. The FBI Dallas office was contacted for further comment on the case but had not responded as of this report.
